Types of Business Web Hosting

Shared Hosting is generally used for smaller websites, that may require few server resources, or are for non-critical applications. Websites hosted on a shared server share the available resources (disk space, memory, processing power) with the other websites that sit on the server.

Virtual Private Servers (VPS) are marketed as a semi-private server, a large server is segmented into a number of smaller software servers, the VPS is allocated set space, and resources on the server. These are often suited to hosting multiple websites from a single organisation, or more intensive single websites (perhaps e-commerce, or larger corporate sites).

Dedicated Servers are a physical server, just for your organisation / business’s use. You can generally put whatever you like on the server, and it typically offers much a more powerful specification than any of the other options available. You could host powerful e-commerce sites and several large content managed sites on these.

Cloud Hosting is essentially a large network of servers, grouped together to provide on-demand availability, with scalable resources. There are public, and private cloud networks, and cloud hosting may be shared, VPS or your own private cloud / dedicated environment. Cloud solutions are often more expensive; however they offer considerable benefits in terms of backups and availability.
